Pulau Ubin

Shaped like a boomerang, Pulau Ubin (Granite Island) is situated just off the north eastern corner of mainland Singapore and provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A trip to Pulau Ubin is like a trip back to Singapore in the '60s. There are about a hundred villagers living in kampongs and relying on wells for water and noisy diesel generators for electricity.

Outdoor activities are the main tourist attractions here. Cycling is a pleasure, there are hardly any vehicles on the road and most of the paths are shaded.

On the right, the broken lines are dirt tracks. We were told that this is quite a difficult track, so we did not go there. But apparently, Chek Jawa, where the arrow is pointing, has the most spectacular sealife.

The only way to reach Pulau Ubin is by bumboats which operate from Changi Point Ferry Terminal from 6am until 8pm. The ride takes approximately 10mins and costs $2.50 per person ($2.00 extra if you bring your bike) per trip. There are no scheduled departure times and the bumboats will set off only when there are 12 passengers. However, if you are in a hurry, you can hire the whole boat.

Hired bikes. The sign said $2.00 per day. We paid $12.00 for both of us. Because they were mountain bikes? We brought our own helmets.

Studying the route.

Another popular outdoor activity.

Ketam Mountain Bike Park, not recommended for first time cyclists.

Follow the sign.

Dead end.

You have been warned

What does that sign say?

Oh, okay, pushing bike.

Pedestrians..........

Sifu says, you must ride like this to go up a slope...

Nearly there............................................and.........gone!

Coming downhill is more fun.

One of the many quarries.

Time to go back

Goodbye Pulau Ubin

Just in case you forget Gold glitters and shine.........but heavy metal slow you down lah!

Dear Fellow Riders,

During the "ride with CM" and today teluk bahang ride, I'm so sad to see there are a few incidents that the driver keep pressing the horn even though the Rela ask them to stop. I hope that with encourage more riders riding on the road, we can send a message to them that cycling is fun and healthy lifestyle.

We got everything in Penang but just that some people does not appreciate what we have until one day they will lost it.

Best Regards, Ray

Yes, I have seen quite a few impatient drivers too !

We need to get the message across to these drivers that cyclists have the same right to the roads.

Lets encourage more cyclists to join gclub ride next month. If possible we will have a few hundred cyclists on the road, choke up part of the road to Teluk Bahang, what about that ?? We must make a mark so that people will take notice !

I am impressed that Singapore can turn a small seemly useless island into a tourist jewel !!  Only a tiny Pulau Ubin, how many islands do we have that is bigger and nicer than Pulau ubin?

We have Penang island, it's a potential tourist attraction for cyclists, with tracks like Teluk Bahang, Balik Pulau, and multitudes of exciting jungle hill tracks but tell me is there anything that can come close to what Diana and Micheal had shown us in their pictures?  WHAT IS OUR TOURIST DEPT DOING !!??? Really sad (sick) !

Why not consider Pulau Jerejak as an offroad destination. there's the ferry services, and maybe a nice route :  skip the shipyard/dry dock section or leper colony area?

No they don't allow visitors to bring their own bikes.  If you want to ride you have to rent their bicycles, which is RM40 per day.  That was few years back.  I don't know if it still applies.

For RM40 a day you get a pretty low end bikes.

They do lay cobble stone road on Pitt Street though...;)

Oh yeah Pulau Ubin.  Hard about it but never make a trip to visit it whenever I am in Singapore....:(

Matching red G club jerseys. Wow both of u are really into exercise holidays. No more lazing by the pool side with glasses of drinks. I think this is a lot healthier holiday. No wonder Mike was zooming away and leaving all of us behind today   :-00

check out the pictures and you will understand where does Mike's "hidden strength" came from.

all other rides with us "ma lat lou", he will be riding very slow !!! but yesterday when i reach Bahang kopitiam, he already finished his Hokkien mee !!!

pls tell me, is he super fast of me losing speed ??? *grin*

Doc, pls do a blood test on Mike & see if he was on performance drugs !!!

While we sleep Mike does his regular workout cycling up Pearl hill, 2 x mine you !  Now his secret bongkar !

Michael cold have improve his speed but I believe those gold stuff slow you down a lot. That is why he can finished his Hokkien Mee before you carry along all the gold stuff to arrive. Gold is nice to see but they are heavy to carry along. You may want to consider exchanging some of my silver staff with your gold staff. Think about it.

If you would ask him, I think he will say not enough gold that is why his bike is slow... next round you might see a gold handle bar!!! hahaha

Countdown to closing 26/9/10 57days
