Grading of Trails

Went on the "1200 steps trail" at air itam with Sifu, Kenny, Raymond, Susumu San and a group of bikepushers blogspot cyclsts. It was a good ride and good mtb lesson for me from Sifu esp this is my 3rd trail ride. The gradient was steeper than what I expected. Hv to stop a few times to reach the top, a mere 4 miserable Km taking almost an hour !!! Before going up the trail my impression was a tougher trail esp after my last last to the Hokkien Cemetery at BAtu Gantong.

Wud it make sense for someone who is well versed with the trails like Turbosnail and gang to come up with some grading system as a guide to newbies like me and outsiders visiting Penang who wanted to do some trails riding. I noticed a lot name given to trails eg Ngor Hean, Firefly trail, Sacred Heart, Iron cross etc etc.

To set the ball rolling, i wud grade for the 7 trails I hv been (correct me if I am not so accurate )  ; 1   to   5  ("1" easiest  .  "5" severest)

1)  HERITAGE RIDE              1   ( flat unchallenging terrain for all age groups)

2) PEARL HILL                     2    (Strenuous but manageable for reasonable fit cyclists)

3) MT ERSKINE                    2   (Strenuous but manageable watch out for hazards)

4) TLK BAHANG                   2    (Manageable, watch out for road traffic at Ferringhi)

5) 1200 STEPS                    3    (Strenuous, above average to cycle up all the way)

6) GERTAK SANGGUL           3    (Strenuous and challenging esp the slope down certain part)

7) ROUND ISLAND               4    (Challenging)

8) BATU GANTONG CEMETRY   5     (Very strenuous, for seasoned cyclists)

Since Daniel has started working on the trails again, I feel it appropriate to bring this thread in again. So everyone, hopefully, we can all contribute to the grading of new trails

For No. 1, don't la put 'for kids'. Make me malu if I want to do Heritage Ride. Embarassed

Hi Diana,

Good to see u blogging again. Ok I hv chg it to all age groups. See both of you soon.

Hahaha! Thanks Doc! Cool

Diana, has Mike fixed his BIONIC legs ???

Cheers

Captain, not yet. He's seeing the specialist on Monday.

Wah!! Daniel has done up the different color coding for the diff level of trails so beautifully. lets hope all of us will grade our ride / trail after each ride. I believe Daniel will create a new icon for trails and grades soon

Dear Dr,

It is a great idea and helps a lot for new riders who are always very keen to

attend new trail, however it is still not sure if it is suitable for them  or not.

From this point of view, I am agreeable for 101 % of this idea, and hope

this will be shown at any trail introduced from now on.

I know it is not easy to show it with exact figure however, any description would

be helpful to let them decide if they are qualified to attend or not.

" Better than nothing",and at least it was described by person who really attended,it is

very valuable indication, I believe.

Perhapy the way of description are to be amended from time to time, however

this will be the first step to go forward for the year of 2010.

Many thanks again,Dr for your new trial of this idea, and it is very much appreciated

from new riders point of view.

Susumu

I was informed by Dr that Bikepushers have added a link in their blogspot site to ours and therefore in accordance to our reciporal link policy we now add a link to their site. Check menu option Link.

I laughed my pants off when I read their comments on the photos they posted. A funny blog it is!

yeah lah so many TOLAK one!!!!

MTB = Mari Tolak Basikal

or during past years Penang Jamboree = 'Merry Tolak Basikal'

That is a good one. No one they all tolak basikal all the way

I thought that MTB = Mari Terbang/Terjun Basikal ...hahah

Dr,

I browsed the net for grading trail difficulties and I found that these terms are commonly used  : EASY, MODERATE and CHALLENGING.  In between there are EASY TO MODERATE, MODERATE TO CHALLENGING.

Can I suggest that instead of just saying that a 'trail is graded 2', which does not really tell a lot, can we describe a ride as '2 MODERATE ?  So redoing your grading above, I have this-

Trail Grade Description
HERITAGE RIDE 1 EASY; A piece of cake  -  flat unchallenging terrain for kids
PEARL HILL 2 EASY TO MODERATE; Strenuous but manageable for reasonable fit cyclists
MT ERSKINE 2 EASY TO MODERATE; Strenuous but manageable watch out for hazards
1200 STEPS 3 MODERATE;Strenuous, above average to cycle up all the way
ROUND ISLAND 4 MODERATELY CHALLENGING; for reasonably fit cyclists
BATU GANTONG CEMETRY 5 CHALLENGING; Very strenuous, for seasoned cyclists only

Grading trails are quite subjective.  But if we can consistently apply the grades to all our trails, it can be a useful guideline for cyclists...my 2 sens

Mountain biking trail grades

<!-- THE MAIN PAGE CONTENT -->

Trail grades are split between those for cross-country singletrack trails and those for bike parks and forest roads.

This is to highlight that:

  • forest roads can be of variable difficulty and are not part of a progression on to green and blue level singletrack trails.
  • Similarly, orange-graded bike parks are not simply a progression on from singletrack grades.
  • Explanations for each of the gradings are given below the symbol tables.

Cross country singletrack trail grades

Grade Symbol
Green - easy A green circle means an easy grade trail
Blue - moderate A blue square means an moderate grade trail
Red - difficult A red triangle means a difficult grade trail
Black - severe A black diamond means a severe grade trail

These are a general indication of difficulty - there are easier and more tricky options available within each grade.

Non-singletrack trail grades

Grade Symbol

Orange Bike Park

An orange lozenge means an extreme grade for a bike park
Forest road and similar Routes may or may not be waymarked

The grades explained:

Cross country singletrack trail grades

Green grade - easy trails

  • Green grade trails are suitable for: beginners or novice cyclists.
  • Bike required: most bikes and mountain bike hybrids are suitable.
  • Skills needed: basic bike skills are required for this grade.
  • Trail and surface types: these will be relatively flat and wide. Trail surface might be loose, uneven or muddy at times. Might include short flowing singletrack-style sections. Some green routes can take trailers.
  • Gradients and technical trail features: climbs and descents are mostly shallow. No challenging features.
  • Suggested fitness level: suitable for most people in good health.

Blue grade - intermediate trails

  • Blue grade trails are suitable for: intermediate cyclists or mountain bikers with basic off-road riding skills.
  • Bike required: basic mountain bike or mountain bike hybrid.
  • Skills needed: basic off-road riding skills to cope with uneven surfaces and small obstacles.
  • Trail and surface types: as for 'green', plus specially constructed singletrack trails. Trail surface might include small obstacles of root and rock.
  • Gradients and technical trail features: most gradients are moderate but might include short steep sections. Includes small technical trail features (such as roots and rock).
  • Suggested fitness level: a good standard of fitness can help.

Red grade - difficult trails

  • Red grade trails are suitable for: proficient mountain bikers with good off-roading skills.
  • Bike required: quality off-road mountain bikes.
  • Skills needed: good off-roading skills and techniques to cope with technical trail features.
  • Trail and surface types: steeper and tougher, mostly singletrack with technical sections. Expect very variable surface types.
  • Gradients or technical trail features: a wide range of climbs and descents of a challenging nature will be present. Expect boardwalks, berms, large rocks, medium steps, drop-offs, cambers and water crossings.
  • Suggested fitness level: a higher level of fitness and stamina is required.

Black grade - severe trails

  • Black grade trails are suitable for: expert mountain bike users, used to physically demanding routes.
  • Bike required: a good quality off-road mountain bike is needed.
  • Skills needed: advanced level off-roading skills and technical ability.
  • Trail and surface types: as for 'red', but with an expectation of greater challenge and continuous difficulty. Can include any useable trail and might include exposed open hill sections.
  • Gradients or technical trail features: expect large, committing and unavoidable technical trail features. Sections will be challenging and variable. Might also have 'downhill' style sections.
  • Suggested fitness level: suitable for very active people used to prolonged effort.

Non-singletrack trail grades

Orange - bike park

  • Bike parks are suitable for: riders aspiring to an elite level of technical ability; incorporates everything from full on downhill riding to 'big air' jumps.
  • Trail and surface types: severe constructed trails and/or natural features. All sections will be challenging. Includes extreme levels of exposure or risk. Jumping ability obligatory.
  • Gradients or technical trail features: will include a range of small, medium and large technical trail features, including downhill trails, freeride sections and mandatory jumps.
  • Suggested fitness level: a good standard of fitness is recommended but technical skills are more important.

Forest road and similar

  • Forest roads are suitable for: a wide range of cyclists.
  • Bike required: most bikes and mountain bike hybrids are suitable
  • Skills needed: basic map reading will be helpful for roads which are not waymarked or signposted
  • Trail and surface types: relatively flat and wide. The trail surface might be loose, uneven or muddy at times. These roads might be also be used by vehicles and others including horse riders and dog walkers.
  • Gradients and technical trail features: gradients can be very variable and might include short, steep sections. Occasional potholes might be present. Routes might not be waymarked or signposted.
  • Suggested fitness level: a good standard of fitness can help.

Warning signMountain biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk. It should only be undertaken with a full understanding of all inherent risks. These guidelines must always be used in conjunction with the exercise of your own experience, intuition and careful judgment.

I find round island very tough especially scalling the teluk bahang hill.  Batu Gantong hill is steep but the distance is shorter and overall the ride is easier except certain parts need to carry the bike.  My personal opinion after riding batu gantong once and round island twice.

ok, point taken. Daniel had upgraded the round island to level 4. I am probably biased in the batu gantong trail because of my tumble!!

Thanks for the comment. Hope more of you will contribute to the trail grading.

Should CAMPAIGN FOR A LANE - COME RIDE WITH THE CM; 2nd EDITION (2010) be continued this year in September or October, 2010 ?

We have received news from the state exco that there are too many bicycling events and some of it should be combined (in other words cancelled). To me this is a silly notion. The more cycling events there are in the state, the more awareness there will be and it should augur well for the cycling community.
