A gentle reminder to those using car roof rack.
Do you know that you have a apply a permit for your car roof rack ?? It is actually pretty easy to apply and it's free. All you have to do is to fill in a JPJ form, attach 4 pictures of you roof rack fixed onto you car with bicycles. The pictures need to show front, rear, right and left side.
Put a self addressed envelope (with stamp) and once the officer viewed your application together with the pictures attached, a approval letter (2 copies) with be sent back to you. The whole process took about 3 to 5 weeks depending on your luck. Then place a copy inside your car.
With the approved letter, police or JPJ will not "kacau" you anymore.
However, this only apply for roof rack. I do not know if JPJ will approve the rear bike holding rack or not. I heard you will be in trouble the minute police stops you as some parts of your bicycle will be "blocking" the number plate or your rear view.
Probably someone can tell me if you had tried to apply for the rear rack from JPJ.

your car's fuel consumption will suffer by approximately 10%. Even without the bike on top, the rack actually compromises the aerodynamic of the car quiet a bit. I have recorded approximately 10% less km for a full tank. Took the rack off after I hit the automated cantilevered awning of my guardhouse during a heavy downpour as I forgot I was carrying my bike on top. Nevertheless, its still the most convenient mean to carry your bicycle around. Didn't know we need a permit though. Thanks for your input
in Singapore...can see a lot of ppl use rear rack...Malaysia BOLEH lah....
Sifu was very helpful, I hv got my authorisation letter from JPJ. Now carry my bike on car top with confident. use to worry will get stopped.I think those with rear rack will be worse. shud apply for the letter than having to worry abt the police

You are right. When put up a rear rack make sure the bike and the rack will not block the view of car reg number.
I am not sure if JPJ approval required for rear rack. But no harm to ask...;)
